How Tgarchiveconsole Actually Works (Not Magic)
Tgarchiveconsole is a web frontend. It talks to a database. Local or remote (holding) your Telegram exports.
That database holds JSON, SQLite, or custom schemas. Not live data. Not cloud sync.
Just what you gave it.
I built mine with SQLite. Fast. Lightweight.
No server needed. You could use PostgreSQL if you love extra steps (why do you love extra steps?).
The auth layer is basic. Login. Session cookie.
Nothing fancy. If you skip it, anyone on your network can poke around your chat history. (Yes, that happened to me.
Once.)
Indexing happens after import. The engine reads your export, pulls out sender IDs, timestamps, media types, links. All of it.
Then it tags and sorts. So when you search “pizza” + “May 2023”, it finds that group chat where Dave sent three memes and a Domino’s coupon.
Here’s the real example: A message from @jane_doe at 2023-05-12T14:22:01Z with a link to example.com/report.pdf. The parser grabs her ID, the ISO timestamp, the domain, the file extension. Then it drops those into searchable fields.
Not just text. Metadata.
It cannot decrypt secret chats. It cannot fetch messages you never exported. It cannot bypass Telegram’s privacy settings.
If it could, I’d be banned from the app store already.
You control the data. You feed it. You own the database.
No surprises. No hidden hooks. Just code doing what you told it to do.
And if you break the import path? Indexing fails silently. You’ll search for hours wondering why “mom’s birthday” returns nothing.
(Pro tip: Always check the logs folder after import.)
Tg Archive Control Panel: Setup Without the Headache
I set this up on three different machines last month. Two worked fine. One leaked data for four days before I caught it.
Here’s what you need first: Python 3.9+, a Telegram export file (HTML or JSON), and either PostgreSQL or SQLite. Docker? Optional.
Don’t overthink it.
Clone the repo. Run pip install -r requirements.txt. That’s step one.
Done.
Now open .env. Set SECRETKEY (do) not reuse your GitHub password. Set DATABASEURL.
If you’re using SQLite, it’s just sqlite:///db.sqlite3. And turn DEBUG=False. Seriously.
If it’s True, you’re broadcasting your stack trace to anyone who pings the server.
Run migrations: python manage.py migrate. Import your export: python manage.py importtelegramexport path/to/export.html. Then start the server: python manage.py runserver.
Go to http://localhost:8000.
If the dashboard loads, you’re halfway there.
But now (the) part everyone skips.
Disable the default admin account. Right now. Put a reverse proxy in front and force HTTPS.
Nginx works. Caddy works better. Block port 8000 from the public internet.
Use a firewall rule. Not “maybe later.”
Leaving DEBUG=True in production? That’s like leaving your apartment door unlocked and handing out the address.
Test your search endpoint safely:
curl -I http://localhost:8000/api/search?query=test
If you get 200 OK, good.
If you get 500, go back to .env.

This isn’t theoretical. I broke mine twice. Both times were .env mistakes.
Tgarchiveconsole is solid. If you treat it like infrastructure, not a toy.

Real Things You Can Do Right Now

I use this every week. Not for fun. For actual work.
Auditing team channel history? Yes. You can pull six months of @channel_name messages and check for compliance gaps.
Try from:@marketing after:2023-06-01 has:document. That finds docs shared in marketing since June 2023. The results table shows sender, timestamp, and file type (no) guessing.
Accidentally deleted a shared file? It’s still in the archive. Search by filename or date range.
Recover it in under thirty seconds.
You don’t need to hand out login credentials to share data. Generate a time-limited export link instead. Set it to expire in 48 hours.
Send it to your lawyer. Done.
Daily backups? I run cron + pg_dump on my local archive instance. Then an automated script imports new exports.
No manual drag-and-drop. No missed days.
Regex in message searches? Yes. Use it to find variations of “v1.2” or “version one point two”.
Bulk tag assignment? Tag fifty messages as “client-review” with one click.

You’re not scanning logs for fun. You’re verifying something happened. Or proving it didn’t.

Tg Archive Control Panel: When It Just Won’t Cooperate
I’ve stared at “No results found” more times than I care to admit. It’s rarely the data. It’s usually the datetime parsing.
Especially if your export isn’t timezone-aware.
Full-text search? You have to turn it on in the DB. Not optional.
Not implied. Just check settings.py and confirm it’s enabled. (Yes, it’s off by default.)
Login loops? Clear your browser storage first. Then double-check session cookie settings.
If you’re still spinning, look at settings.py (not) your coffee.
Slow search with >50k messages? SQLite is choking. Switch to PostgreSQL.
Or add full-text indexes. Your call. But don’t wait until it’s unbearable.
Logs live in logs/app.log or Docker stdout. Database failures show up as OperationalError or timeout patterns. Malformed JSON imports?
Look for JSONDecodeError. Usually line one.
Tgarchiveconsole isn’t magic. It’s code. And code breaks predictably (if) you know where to look.
